Malpaso Gang the surprise hit of the Bellrock Blues Festival

### FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ###

The Malpaso Gang claims the title of the 'surprise hit of the Bellrock Blues Festival'

It looked as though it might be a dire gig for the Gang, as the set up their gear in an empty bar in Arbroath. Dead empty. As the time past and downbeat loomed a few stray lovers of country music willing to gamble on an unknown-in-these-parts band drifted in. Tumbleweeds, blowing into the bar. But then it happened, the band ran through a blistering soundcheck and out came the mobile phones. It was clear that this was going to be a gig to be reckoned with.

And the calls went out.

Within the opening minutes of the first set the club was packed, shoulder to shoulder with only a little room to dance. One jaw-dropping tale of lost love and heartache after another, all set to a driving country beat. Miss Nina worked the room, the boys held their own and together the Gang recreated the heaving, sweaty feel of a West Texas Roadhouse.

And more calls went out.

By the end of the set there was a line out the door, the music spilling over the threshold like a settlers land rush. Smokers dancing on the streets. And when the last mournful note of the steel guitar had faded, and the reluctant punters started to drift away it was clear to all- they had been part of something special, a true to life recreation of that old school of country music, played straight and delivered with breathtaking honesty and fire; the surprise hit of the festival.

The band has limited availability through the end of the year. Book now, or forever hold your peace.

Review of our gig at The Moorings on the 6th of August

A glowing review from local music fan Graham Knight, who attended our gig at The Moorings on Saturday the 6th of August. Cheers, Graham!

"The Malpaso Gang topped the bill at The Moorings and played to a smaller crowd than usual for this lively venue.

Popular femme vocalist, Nina, announced that she was infanticipating and would be sitting on a barstool for most of the night.

The band began with Hank William's pre-rock'n'roll rocker, "Honky Tonkin'" and for the rest of the set Nina hardly sat on the aforementioned barstool but was swaying in her usual sexy manner.

Malpaso Gang followers will have noticed some new numbers in the hour long set - the best was a cover of Don Gibson's "Sea of Heartbreak".
During one tear-jerking number two dancers were spotted doing a slow waltz - surely a first at The Moorings. The evening ended with a rousing rendition of "White Lightning." Son Henry was outstanding and managed to change guitars three times during the show."

This time we'll be armed with not only too many guitars, lapsteels, cowboy hats and cheeky banter - a baby bump has been added to the mix. All knocked up and ready to go. Oh dear. It's gonna be one night. Come and see us.

Malpasos at Musa, back for more...

###  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ###

Aberdeen's favorite rebel-rousing country band, the Malpaso Gang, will return to the scene of an earlier crime with a return engagement at Cafe Musa on Friday the 3rd of June. Details, while sketchy at this moment are as follows. The Gang will storm into the bar, drink all the expensive beer and insult someone's mother while setting up too many guitars. After making space for a large pinafore and an oversized drum kit the music will start. And that, my friends, is what this is all about.

Because the Malpaso Gang is all about the music. Old music, original music, the stuff that mattered. When a truck was a Chevy with V8, not some little hybrid rice burner. And the road was gravel, TV's were black and white, and Hank was singing on the radio. George Jones, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline. The real stuff. And, as kings of the block, the guns get left at home. It's the steel guitar that'll kill ya.

So, be smarter than your cousins. Meet us there around 8, grab some food and a beer and settle in for the night. But bring dancing shoes- we warned you.

Oh, and bring cigars. We're celebrating!

The Malpaso Gang returns to the scene of the crime...

### FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ###

The rising stars of Alt.Old.Country managed to get through another gig at the Aberdeen Moorings bar with livers and wallets intact after cutting a wide swath through a bar better known for Slayer and Motorhead.

Performing a sublime mix of originals and long forgotten covers, the band demonstrated yet again why they are the reigning monarch of Scottish country music. That might be due to hard work, although we doubt it. Probably more a reflection of their profound distaste for the alt.karaoke that passes for country music in the Grampians, an abiding recklessness and a small tin pot with the title 'Best Indie Band' that they walked away with at the Fudge Music Awards. They are well on their way to their own pulp-fiction style music soundtrack in the life story of every truck driving fool in the UK.

It's true that they stand for all that's good and right in the world- Lone Star Beer, Fender Guitars, and Chevy Trucks. The rest, as they say, is just details.

The band, frankly, couldn't be bothered to comment.

Drawing attention and getting ready for a busy weekend 25/26 March

(download)
Friday 25 March we'll be playing at 'Draw' at The Tunnels in Aberdeen, an event organised by Tunnels 2 and artists collectives Stray Dog and Collective 26 for people basically to come and ermm...well yes, draw. Anyway, while the artists are busy drawing and the drinkers busy drinking we'll be entertaining the crowd with a selection of our best songs. Hopefully the artists will find time to get away from their papers and pencils and do a bit of dancing too. Malpaso's lead singer is always the biggest draw on stage so that shouldn't be too big a challenge. Oh, and you don't need to be an artist to come and see us. You may want to bring a pencil sharpener though, it'll make you new friends. Do draw us if you dare!

The Tunnels, Aberdeen
Entry £3, doors open 8pm.
Live music by The Malpaso Gang, Tupelo Town Assembly and Stewart Ross
+ Vjs, booze, smiles and banter.

If you've missed that fabulous night or you just can't get enough of us, we're on stage the next night at The Moorings. We're delighted to be headlining the night, supported by the Acid Fascists and Foxhunting. I think it's save to say you can leave your pencils at home.

The Malpaso Gang wins 'Best Indie Band' in the Aberdeen Fudge Music Awards!

Aberdeen's newest country band, the Malpaso Gang, proud heirs to the long tradition of outstanding country music rooted in the fertile forelands of the Grampian Highlands have claimed the title of... 'Best Indie Band' in the Aberdeen Fudge Music Awards.

They credit their success to a profound love for professional wrestling set to a soundtrack of Buck Owens, and their legions of adoring fans.

"We're so proud" said spokesperson Nina Eggens after downing her 8th shot of whiskey and shooting out all the bottles behind the bar, aiming from the hip. "It's all down to Hank Williams song 'Rambling Man", she said. It was the train whistle that apparently set off the fusilade, claiming the lives of the cheap liquor behind the bar. No survivors were reported.

No news as yet about posting bail for the Gang's sharpshooting lead singer. That might need to wait while the band raises money to pay off the bar bill.

The bar tab resulted from drinking following the brawl that erupted when, while claiming an unrelated award for a stranded steel guitarist, Matt Duncan made an insightful comment about a neighbouring city in an unfortunate moment of candor and honesty. Dave Haxton, off to fetch another pint, could not be reached for comment.

All of which is appropriate, because as we all know, country music is all about true stories. And all this, we swear, is true.

How to get heavy metal fans up waltzing to old country music

165340_1715632701188_1549325936_31706533_5480316_n
The first two gigs of the year went very well. We kicked off on Saturday the 8th of January headlining a gig at the busy Moorings Bar in Aberdeen. After two excellent performances by Edinburgh based metal/rock bands Revelry and Matanuska, we were curious about whether the long-haired, head banging heavy metal dudes in the front would actually appreciate a bit of ol' country, but - hey - we pulled it off. I kid you not - we had them up waltzing and beggin' for more. We'll be back at The Moorings on the 26th of March.

The week after we played at a fully booked Cafe Musa in Aberdeen, which was a totally different cup of tea, or rather - three course meal. Son Henry played a great solo blues set while people were munching their way through their steaks. The full Gang got up and played soon after and made the blue cheese ice cream jump off the plate of anyone who hadn't finished eating by then. When it was time for good old favourites White Lightning by George Jones and Hank Williams' Honky Tonkin' we had people up dancing again, which made our night.

Thanks everyone who came along (and got up dancing!). Let's hope for lots more great gigs soon.
